Round two: Sisi (2021) season 2 review
Season two of Sisi (2021) has just finished, and we've got to talk. So season 2 of Sisi, does it get any better? Spoilers, of course!
Last year (Happy New Year, btw 🥳🎆🍾), I reviewed this somewhat new RTL series and those who have read my review know that it didn't end well (Read here). But in the end, I promised to watch the next season, so I did.
The new episodes are basically about the Austro-Prussian War from 1866, aka the Seven Weeks' War which led to the formation of the Austro-Hungary empire and Austria's exclusion from the german confederation, meaning it was on its own.
Warning: The show is graphic, with strong scenes; I repeat, wait to watch until you are 18. THANK YOU!
And because I started talking about the war, I should also talk about the first thing I didn't like related to it: the lack of nations that participated in the 1866 War. In the show, the attention is directed towards Austria and Hungary in particular, even though in reality, more than 15 nations had fought alongside Germany and around 12 with Austria. Hungary played a much smaller part than it did in the show.
This brings me to another thing I didn't like: the kidnapping storyline. I mean wtf, man? The empress isn't allowed to even go to the bathroom alone, but when it comes to getting kidnapped by a few rebels, there are suddenly no guards around. It makes no sense. Do you really think the Empress of Austria would be running around in a foreign country that is already against her with no protection?

And man, here comes Maria, one of the worst-written characters ever. This child has no personality at all. In case you don't remember, Maria is the daughter of Sisi's ex-lady-in-waiting, who turned out to be a prostitute; at the end, the empress promises to take care of the girl and takes her to Hofburg, where she quickly grows an interest in Franz and follows him frickin everywhere, even on the battlefield! Sisi takes care of her, and she burns down her bed?! She gets so attached to Franz, who sees her more than his son. Maria does nothing but gets into other's businesses and be annoying AF, and then at the end, when she learns about her mother, she leaves Franz and returns to school.

Don't get me wrong, there is drama and spice, but even those can become annoying and frustrating. As I said in the warning, the series is graphic (if you get what I mean). Still, to be honest, I don't think that's a good thing because, in reality, Empress Elizabeth of Austria, unlike one of her distant affines who was also a monarch in Europe (I'll let you figure out who I'm talking about; hint: it starts with V), Sisi had no deep interest in private activities (again, if you get what I mean).
I understand that Sisi (2021) is a romantic period drama, and I have nothing against it. After all, Victoria is my number 1 favourite, and I love it so much strictly for the romance, not the historical accuracy, but this show is very different. The romance isn't even good, and I realise that now. I was thinking, "Why do these people love each other?". And also, the whole premise of the new season makes zero sense. Sisi didn't have such a developed relationship with Andrassy in real life. She may have flirted with him, that's possible, but she indeed hadn't slept with him.
And what's even more frustrating is that the video is perfect, and the quality is brilliant, but the story makes it horrible. Even the acting is decent and would have worked if the plot had made sense.
Ultimately, I want to change my rating to a 3 out of 10 overall and a 2 out of 10 for historical accuracy. Also, I'm currently watching The Empress, and it's way superior. (Review coming soon). I don't know what to say about Sisi (2021), but I'm disappointed. Season 1, although with many cliches and wrong titles, still gave me a good impression and hope that maybe the new season would be better, I guess that wasn't the case.
