Leonardo (2021) review

I finished it! Yup, I have just finished the Leonardo series, I'm going to say this straight out, I didn't like it. Ok, let's talk about it. SPOILER ALERT!

Short summary:

So the show starts with Leonardo (Aidan Turner) being arrested for poisoning. He talks with Stefano Giraldi (Freddie Highmore), who is trying to solve the mystery. And the whole show is basically a continuous transition between the past and the present.

OK, here is actually the first thing I didn't like, the plot. I mean Leonardo being arrested and the entire investigation, eh. They could have started the story with the young Leonardo. But I understand, it's a DRAMA. Also, this show covers da Vinci's masterpieces such as The Portrait of Ginevra de Benci, The Last Supper and Mona Lisa. And you also get to meet the young Michelangelo, but only for a short time.

"What is wrong with that??", well nothing actually. I mean it's an Amazon Prime production, the quality is mediocre and the writing is fine. But the storyline itself is the problem. So the main idea of this show is love and friendship, at least that's what I understood. I mean Leonardo and Catherina de Cremona (the alleged victim) have a very strong friendship and in the end, they eventually fall in love. But before that, Leonardo has more affairs with men and Catherina is not bothered by that.

But here's the part I didn't like. You see, right now we don't really know much about da Vinci's love life. We only know that he wasn't married. But why would the producers want to make an entire series based on that, his love life? I mean we don't even know if Catherina was real or not. The series itself it's based on real characters. Salai, Tommaso, Ludovico and many more actually existed, but there is no evidence that Leonardo was attracted to one of them. And there is no evidence that he had a son like in the show.

The next thing I didn't like was how the characters were built. At some points, Leonardo was a strong fearless man and at some points, he was scared of Catherina. And I genuinely think that Tommaso didn't get enough screen time and Salai got too much. I wanted to see Michelangelo more as well.  By the way, most of the cast is Italian. And I don't see the point in that. Like, there isn't a single scene where they speak Italian. I don't know why, maybe the producers wanted to make them sound more real. I really don't know.

And finally, Leonardo da Vinci is not portrayed well. We all know that he wasn't just an artist, he was a master in everything. He knew mathematics, physics, he was an inventor and he knew autonomy. And in this show, I feel like the producers wanted to show that he was an artist indeed. There are a few scenes where they present his inventor skills, but not long enough.

But yeah, in the end, I give this a 4.5 out of 10. I wasn't really that bad, IN MY OPINION. I just didn't like it because it wasn't historically accurate and I didn't like the storyline.

DON'T FORGET THIS IS MY OPINION AND EVERYTHING I WRITE ON HERE IS BASED ON MY PERSONAL THOUGHTS. THANK YOU!
