(Q&A) Are all Netflix period dramas bad?
Ok, so I actually came across this question. 'Why are all Netflix period dramas so bad?'
I am so sorry if I gave you the impression that ALL Netflix historical dramas are bad, which they are not. I feel this is because of my review of Persuasion (2022), which, to be honest, wasn't that bad if you don't look at the book and background context. But I've read the book and so I must write what I thought about the film and it happened to me not to like it.
Netflix has some amazing original period dramas such as Anne with an e (2017), Bridgeton (2020) and The Crown (2016) of course, which I can't wait for. And one that I really liked and can't wait for the next film is Enola Holmes (2022). But wait, isn't Enola Holmes similar to Persuasion? I mean, they both have powerful characters that break the fourth wall continuously.
Yes, BUT I think Enola Holmes is a film targeted especially at young people. It is a relatively original story so the producers and directors can display it however they want, while Persuasion is the complete opposite. To be understood, a more mature audience is necessary. And I'm not saying that it should follow the book word by word, but you shouldn't change a character's entire personality.
Giphy
Netflix has both good and bad films/series, that's for sure, but I think is more about marketing. Stranger Things and The Witcher are successful because they've been marketed, labelled and simply written the right way and you can see wise investments made whereas Tall Girl and Emily in Paris have been pumped with lots of money and promoted everywhere, maybe to disguise the horrible writing idk.
